Winter brings the excitement of snow and the lead-up to Christmas. During Spring we see the blossom of flowers and a British Summer means the occasional heatwave and barbecue. Lastly, you have the end of British Summer Time and the start of Autumn. Although it lacks the jazz of the other dates in the meteorological calendar, could Autumn be the time to Boost Productivity in the Workplace? Or boost that productivity outside of your working hours?
It may be crazy to claim the season that follows summer is a productive time for the workplace atmosphere but there are a few reasons why this is the case. First of all, consider the summer months. Regardless of whether you work in retail, an office job or outdoors, the days are much longer with more daylight. Instead of hibernating inside in the cold, relaxing as you would in the winter, that time is spent consuming energy at the beach or playing sports. Productivity naturally drops during the Summer months at work because of:
Another explanation for why productivity shifts in a positive fashion is mentality switch. As we turn towards the cold dark winter months, you get more appreciation for your working days and focus on getting tasks done during daylight. There is a spring in the step because between the end of Summer in September and the turn of the year when the sharp frost begins, it’s Christmas after all! A time that many people love in to spend with family and loved ones. Millions are upbeat because of the food, music and exciting festivities that take place. Plus you have the change of the harvest and the beginning of school in September. Everything just feels different.
Between September and December, you have events like Halloween and bonfire night to look forward to, while the weather is not quite as cold yet. Autumn is that time of real focus and clarity – the time to knuckle down and do some work. Summer is over but the cold freeze of Winter is not quite there yet. Autumn has a fresh positive vibe that you can’t shake, still the sun shining through your winder and an appreciation for that final bit of warmth before the cold snap.
Autumn and the falling of leaves ushers in change. It’s a natural part of life we’re all used to and always worth appreciating. So why not embrace that as a business when you need to add layers to keep warm this Autumn? The nights are drawing in sooner so now with the remote/hybrid culture many companies are adopting. You could introduce even more flexible working hours or incentives to work at a more productive pace during daylight with the promise of earlier finishes. All of which could see a Boost Productivity in the Workplace
Get some socials sorted for those events discussed above. Start planning at the beginning so it gives your workforce something to look forward to. It’s also a great time to introduce additional training or launch new company software that will improve productivity. With a focus that is reportedly at a high once Summer ends, it’s a great time to set the culture for the business, regardless of whether it’s established or a startup organisation.
Because energy levels starting to pick up again after longer warmer days with record heatwaves in the UK this Summer and the cold mood of Winter not quite settling in, it’s the perfect time to get ideas bouncing around about how you can all improve the business strategy and focus to drive sales and turnover.
We hope this has stirred a few emotions or moments of reflection for your business this Autumn. There may be some doom and gloom around the workplace as staff need to start wrapping up with temperatures dropping and commuting in the dark to and from work. However, there is also much that is good about the seasonal change which we think can boost productivity. Give it a go and let us know how we can help with any training you may need to maximise performance!
