Diversity in the Workplace

Why Diversity in the Workplace is Important

Everybody wants to feel valued in all walks of life; by family acknowledging our life achievements, friends, as well as professionally in the workplace. If you are from a diverse background, it’s just as important to feel that validation, but it is sometimes overlooked. Many think that diversity just refers to strictly ethnicity but it can also fall under so many other categories, such as gender, sexuality, background or education. In recent times we have seen organisations, charities and government call for a greater level of diversity in the workplace. However, is this important, and if so why?

What is Diversity and How it Differs From Equality

People often confuse diversity with another important term – equality. The former is all about appreciating what an individual does in the workplace. Recognising their efforts and hard work and how they compare individually to another person. Understanding what each individual essentially brings to the table.

The latter in contrast plans to create an environment where everybody feels equal and gets the same treatment regardless of race, background, sexuality, gender or education. It’s ensuring that there is no discrimination in place that is separating a person from accomplishing and being given the same opportunity as others. If you’re singling an individual out because of physical or mental characteristics, you will quickly be found out as a business.

Why a Diverse Workplace Impacts Everyone Positively

It’s not just benefits like working from home or a good pension plan that boost morale within a modern-day business. These days, diversity and inclusion for all are big talking points in UK society. Not just in schools when you’re younger learning the ropes but in your life as a working professional adult too.

Being singled out and excluded or not even considered for a position due to being from a different background can not just impact the individual mentally but damage the reputation of the business as a whole. That’s why more and more companies are now addressing the issues of sexism, racism, religion or disabilities in the application process.

A business becomes more of a pariah for not embracing equality in the workplace than intentional discrimination. Granted, some businesses don’t do this intentionally and are perhaps acting in this way due to bias or trying to uphold traditions from the past, when society was different. But in the 21st century within the workplace, hiring a diverse workforce can do wonders for morale, confidence and even profits.

The Key Benefits of Inclusivity to All (h2)

Diversity in the workplace doesn’t just tick a box or make a better about us business page. It creates a positive message for businesses and society in general. There are many benefits to increased diversity and we explain just a few below!

1.   Encourage Employee Engagement (h3)

Communication is vital in the workplace to keep the ball rolling. To breed success and keep employees interested and motivated, they need to feel engaged in the business. One way of doing that is demonstrating that they will feel valued, regardless of who they are, their age, lifestyle choice or background.

2.   Build Up Confidence for Your Workforce

It’s important to make employees feel valued and appreciated. To show the love, there are a number of ways to do that for each individual and as a team. But you can also build up confidence in the workplace by setting an example as a business. A great way to instil belief and trust is by leading.

Show that by employing a wealthy diversity of people from different parts of society. It demonstrates confidence in all by highlighting that people are more than numbers on a sheet. Instead, they are people that matter and by doing this, you will get the best results and have a collection of employees that want to move forward with you.

3.   Create a Better Morale and Sense of Teamwork

Having a group of individuals from different backgrounds does bring out the best in people the majority of the time. Morale is often higher when people work together and understand the needs and difficulties or challenges people face. For instance, if they have another member of the group from a different religion or ethnicity, they are more understanding of the challenges they may face and then can think in that same caring way with their clients or customers.

4.   Tap Into Different Backgrounds for Innovation

With different cultures, nationalities and religions, you have so many outlooks on life that vary in wonderful ways.

It opens up the platform for creativity as you consider experience and intelligence from all walks of life. In the UK, we have seen some of the best businesses the world has ever seen. But we still export products from all over the world because people want variety.

And the same should be said of picking employees from only one group. It shouldn’t be a male-only business or only people of one nationality. A workforce should be diverse and different to create and innovate even more.

With a population of 65 million and a wide selection of those from alternative backgrounds, you have a much bigger pool to pick from in your workplace once you broaden your horizons.

5.   Boosts the Company Image

It goes without saying that diversity doesn’t only impact society, but also reflects well upon a business. Under the equality act, employers should not discriminate against people because of their background. Picking a diverse workforce will produce a positive image for a business. It demonstrates that they care about people and include all people in the company equation. That some values go beyond success.

6.   Reduce Company Turnover

A happy workplace where people feel valued is also one where company turnover is low. By creating a mixed group of diverse employees, you show that everyone is welcome, keeping morale high and making all feel valued under one roof. It also creates a positive image for those looking from the outside that may wish to join your company in the future.
