Although the weather may be cold and the nights darker much quicker, it doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom this winter. Whether you’re reading this single, in a couple, or with a bunch of kids, there are many different activities you can do inside or out to keep in a positive spirit. Due to the situation being completely different based on whether you’re in a group or going solo, we’ve split this blog into sections to give some fun ideas for all.
Depending on how high spirited your kids are and their tolerance to cold weather will probably determine where you take them! If they can brave the wind, frost and rain, a nice crisp walk along the local beach and a mess about in the sand with a football is lots of fun. Perhaps you could take your dog (if you have one) even if it’s chilly. Alternatively, you could take them for a nature trail or do something fun indoors. Here is a list of cool things to do inside, should the conditions get too bitter but you need to keep the little ones occupied:
If it’s just you and your significant other, you might be counting your blessings as you have a bit more freedom where you go and what activities you get involved in. The world is your oyster whether you visit somewhere indoors or head outside this winter in the UK. Considering many people currently work from home or they’re stuck in an office at a desk 40 hours of the week, it’s better for your health to grab your coat and head outside for some fresh air and fun!
Depending on where you live and your energy levels will determine what you plan for the evenings and weekends outside. For instance, if you live in London there are a bucket load of things you can do to pass the time! They might be cheap and cheery such as a walk along the Thames, a bike ride through Hyde Park, discovering all the beautiful paintings in the National Gallery or getting your think tank working in the VA Museum.
If you live far away from a city, don’t fret either because there is always something going on, even in the countryside. There are so many different sites like Meet Up where you can find new people to meet with like-minded interests, even filtering to match your age group. If you want a romantic weekend date with only your partner, that’s understandable too! It’s all about finding something fun to do that gets you through the winter months and heading towards Spring. Heck, you might even enjoy the cold weather a bit more when you plan and find something exciting. Why not plan a trip away with a hotel or spa break, or go for a local wine tasting? With so many options and businesses set up online these days, it’s only a click and booking away.
It doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom if you’re on your own either, because there are so many activities out there for single people, or should you have some time on your own in isolation. It’s healthy to create a space for reflection, especially if you’ve had a hectic week at work! Take in nature, read a book, visit a local park, go for a run, join a gym, pick up a puzzle or head to the shops. There are so many different ways to keep yourself occupied. Get searching online and think of some fun things to do this winter. If you like learning languages, sign up for your local college course. You may meet your new best friend or future partner there!
Most of all, what we advise in the nicest way possible is to not hibernate in the cave like a bear this winter! 🙂 Spend at least an hour each day going for a walk, getting some exercise and meeting people in a social environment, whether that’s with family, friends or loved ones. The worst thing you can do is close yourself off and think it’s not worth going outside. In 2021, the top four countries for happiness worldwide were Finland, Denmark, Switzerland and Iceland in chronological order. None of those countries are known for their tropical winter climates. They’re some of the coldest nations in Europe but what they do is have that collective spirit to embrace the winter snap. They go out in their communities and encourage positive mental wellbeing during the bitter cold months. Everyone in the UK should do the same if possible, meet up with whoever and get involved in some of the fun activity suggestions listed above. Cross them off like your shopping list and then start again once you’re done, or better yet make a new list!
