Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme - ESOS
ISO 50001 is the internationally recognised standard for Energy Management and is an accepted way of complying with the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme - ESOS.
What is ESOS?
Esos is a new piece of EU Legislation which has required the UK to develop and introduce a mandatory programme of energy audits for larger organisations across the UK.
Does this effect your organisation?
By 5th December 2015 every ‘large enterprise’ (only private sector) will be required, by law, to have completed an energy audit to demonstrate they are complying, this will then be re-done every 4 years.
What Energy is Covered?
Calculate the total for the three areas that is used the organisation over a 12 month period.
Atleast 90% of energy used by an organisation has to be covered by the ESOS Energy Audit.
Certification under international standard ISO 50001 (Energy Management Systems) is permitted as a compliance route under ESOS as an alternative to undertaking ESOS Audits.
ISO 50001 Objective
“Enable organisations to establish the systems & processes necessary to improve energy performance, including energy efficiency, use and consumption”.
Why ISO 50001?
- Because it increases profit
- Because of Climate Change Reduction Targets
- Because it’s good for reputation
Typically, the costs of certification to ISO 50001 will be lower than the costs associated with doing an ESOS Energy Audit.
The ISO 50001 certificate must be valid and in date by 5th December 2015 which is the ESOS compliance date.
THERE ARE PENALTIES FOR NON-COMPLIANCE BY 5TH DECEMBER 2015
