Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme - ESOS

ISO 50001 is an accepted way of complying with the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme - ESOS.

What is ESOS?

ESOS stands for Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme. It is EU legislation that the UK chose to acquire post-Brexit. Our ESOS Consultants are here to help. To learn more about ESOS, click here. You will note that the government has postponed Phase 4 changes until 5 December 2027.

Does this affect your organisation?

As of the 5th December 2015, every ‘large enterprise’ (only private sector) was required, by law, to have completed an energy audit to demonstrate they are complying. This is then be re-done every four years. If your organisation is considered a ‘large enterprise’, you are expected to comply. During the pandemic, several non-compliant businesses received enforcement notices from regulators. Those who fail to take action are at risk of incurring fines of up to £50,000 plus an additional £500/day of non-compliance.

MEASURE
Calculate the total energy you use for the three areas across the organisation over 12 months.
PLAN
The ESOS Energy Audit must cover at least 90% of the energy used by an organisation.
AUDIT
Certification under the international standard ISO 50001 (Energy Management Systems) is permitted as a compliance route under ESOS. Consequently, this is an alternative to undertaking ESOS Audits.

Typically, the costs of certification to ISO 50001 will be lower than the costs associated with doing an ESOS Energy Audit.

The ISO 50001 certificate must be valid and in date when the organisation is under review for the purposes of ESOS.
