Nestlé: Smarties Switch To 100% Recyclable Packaging

Nestlé has taken initiative and become the first global confectionery brand, to switch to 100% completely recyclable paper packaging. It comes with no surprise that Nestlé was the first global brand to pursue this change, as they have actively shown their support in the fight against environmental problems.

What do Nestle say?

Nestlé has publicly said their aim is to reduce the impact they have on the environment while growing as a business; on top of this they have reported some impressive numbers over the last year, lowering their energy consumption per tonne by 26% and avoiding the use of 45,000 tonnes of packaging materials.

How is it manufactured?

The video below gives us a good insight into how the new paper packaging is manufactured, and the next step in Nestlé’s plan towards being completely plastic free on all products by 2025.

So, What does this mean?

Visually the packaging has not changed much and has kept its normal smarties feel that we know and love, a small noticeable change is the new label added on the corner of each packaging to let everyone know that they have switched to completely recyclable materials.

It is said that this change to paper packaging will remove approximately 250 million plastic packs sold worldwide every year, in a press conference with Alexander von Maillot the Global head of confectionery at Nestlé.

Nestlé has also signed up to the European Plastics Pact, which will help them achieve the 100% recyclable packaging by 2025; as well as changing all Buxton water bottles to 100% recyclable plastic by the end of 2021.

It’s amazing to see global companies such as Nestlé taking a step in the right direction towards creating a greener future for everyone, hopefully other companies will see success. Not to mention the benefits Nestlé have gained from this campaign and follow in their footsteps in order to save our environment.
