Do You Struggle To Relax? Here are our Top 3 Tips to get Relaxed!

It’s National Lazy Day on the 10th of August so it’s time to celebrate…. Or not. In the current state of the world, it seems the majority of people all share a common problem when it comes to relaxing. No one knows how to do it! We’re so caught up in our work that sometimes we forget to relax. A survey with more than 2,000 adults found that over 40% of people say they struggle with finding ways of switching off. One of the most common reasons for this was “I just don’t know how to relax”. But not to worry I’m here to show you 5 proven methods on how to relax.

Why Take The Time Out To Unwind?

According to the World Health Organization 1 in 4 people around the world will at one point be affected by mental or neurological disorders in their lives. This can range from depression to anxiety to even stress. The root of mental health problems can arguably be pinned on stress which can result from life and the inability to unwind or relax. Mind a British Mental Health Charity, says relaxing is an important part of looking after your mental health. Not only when you are experiencing stress or anxiousness but throughout the day as being able to unwind after a long day can help to prevent these negative thoughts.

Benefits

In addition to mental health, taking the time to relax every day boasts many benefits. These benefits include.

  • Slowing Heart Rate
  • Lowering Blood Pressure
  • Improve Digestion.
  • Maintain Blood Sugar Levels.
  • Lowering Fatigue.
  • Improve concentration and mood.
  • Improving Sleep Quality.
  • And many more….

So How Do I Relax?

Now you know why you should relax, here are some scientific ways you can relax.

  1. Get A Pet.

Studies have shown that getting a pet of any nature can improve your health. It was also found that pet owners over the age of 65 make 30% fewer trips to the doctors than those without pets. In addition to hospital trips, pet owners were found to be less likely to suffer from depression. If this isn’t a good enough reason to get a pet, I don’t know what is.

  1. The Most Relaxing Song Ever.

A study commissioned by bubble bath and shower gel firm Radox Spa was on the search for the most relaxing song possible. The results from their search were quite promising they found that Weightless – by Marconi Union was the most effective at helping people relax (take a listen below). Brain scans showed that the music worked by stimulating parts of your brain not only responsible for processing sound but also emotions. It was said that the song was so therapeutic that it was more relaxing than a massage, walk, or a cup of tea.

  1. Why not relax with Mindfulness / Yoga?

Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) is a new healing approach that combines meditation and yoga. MBSR aims to address the unconscious thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are thought to increase stress and undermine your health. The effects of MBSR were monitored amongst employee’s mental health in a systemic review study. The results showed that MBSR helped to improve psychological functioning in employees ranging from reduced emotional exhaustion (burnout) to reduced levels of depression and anxiety alongside higher levels of self-compassion and better quality of sleep.
