World Environment Day 2020

Today, 5th June 2020, we are celebrating World Environment Day. This day is very relevant to our business as we implement and maintain many of our clients ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems across the UK and Ireland. ISO 14001 drives businesses to review and reduce the impact their operations have on our environment. The purpose of this day is to encourage worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. Whilst our management systems drive businesses, they do not mandate individuals in their private lives. It feels this day has come at no better time than the present.

As many have been furloughed or are working from home and with the fabulous weather we have been having, time in public spaces has drastically increased. We have noticed many enjoying themselves by having picnics and barbecues in local parks and public spaces. Sadly, as you may have seen on the news, not everyone is putting their rubbish that has been generated as a result in the nearby bins, or in cases where these may not be available or full, taking it home.

We believe that today is not only about stating that we are celebrating World Environment Day but educating people on the impacts of littering that many are unlikely to consider when they leave their disposable barbecues and bottles in the park after a day of picnicking.

Litter creates toxins which can pollute water. Plants, animals, fish and other living organisms ingest the toxic water. Toxins in the water can lead to blood clots, serious illness and death in all life that consumes water. Polluted ponds and rivers can kill off surrounding life. We ask that when you are using your down time as a result of COVID-19 to enjoy a picnic or barbecue in the park to think twice about how you dispose of your rubbish.
